Summer Math Packet
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We would like to take the opportunity to inform you about the summer math program that has been put into place here at the middle school. In the past, students have participated in a summer reading program to ensure they maintain their skills over the summer.
The students have had to read multiple novels and complete designated assignments that accompany their novels. Through that program, the students have demonstrated how important it is to read and write throughout the summer. We are now going to widen the focus to assist the students to maintain their previously learned math skills. As not to overwhelm the students, they are only required to read one novel for their summer reading assignment. Of course, we are encouraging the students to continue to read throughout the entire summer. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that students maintain
previously learned concepts in the areas of reading, writing and math.
The students will be given math packets to complete over the course of the summer. These packets have been designed to review topics that were taught to them this past school year. These topics should be reinforced to assist students in their upcoming math program. For optimal results, it is highly recommended that they complete a portion of the packet each week. This will ensure that skills are being reinforced weekly and that the students do not become overwhelmed. This packet will count as the first test grade in your child’s math class. It will be due on Friday, September 2, 2011.
We have seen significant increases in the areas of reading and writing over the past few years here at the middle school. We are now adding more math initiatives to our focus. We hope to see similar results starting with this packet. You will learn more about the initiatives in math once the new school year begins. We are excited to help our students meet high standards in all academic areas. Thank you for your support in accomplishing this goal.
Sincerely,
Middle School Math Department
